Title: Origin of water on the Moon: An update

“The Moon was dry, and then it wasn’t. Now we just aren’t sure how wet it is, or where the volatiles came from, or when they arrived.”
The discovery of indigenous H-bearing species in various lunar samples - together with the detection of water ice in polar regions at the lunar surface - has led to a paradigm shift in our knowledge and understanding of the water inventory of the Moon. The hydrogen (D/H) isotope ratio is a key tracer for the source of water; however, secondary processes such as solar wind implantation and cosmic ray induced spallation reactions have modified the primordial D/H signature of 'water' in all rocks and soils recovered on the Moon.
In this talk, I will present some results of our lunar 'water' studies. Recently, we have coupled hydrogen isotope analyses with measurements of noble gases (He-Ne-Ar) in order to re-evaluate the production rate of cosmogenic deuterium at the lunar surface. This is critical for correcting measured D/H for the cosmogenic contribution, and, ultimately, for comparing lunar hydrogen isotope ratios with those of potential Solar System sources (i.e., terrestrial, solar, chondritic, cometary). Our results demonstrate that in light of future missions to the Moon, such as the forthcoming Roscosmos Luna-27 south polar lander, space exposure effects will have to be carefully evaluated if the D/H ratio is to be used as an indicator for the source(s) of water.
